Since its establishment in 1988, this medium sized vineyard, in the heart of Coonawarra , the awards have flooded in, for Kym Tolly and his team, both from gruelling and ultra critical Aussi wine judging circuit and international Critics. The wines are always elegant and well balanced, that show a marked ability To age gracefully, being Australian they are distinctive and full flavoured.
2008 Penley Estate Gryphon Merlot x 2
This wine has a deep colour with strong red purple hues. The bouquet is strong and complex due to the distinct floral and ripe fruit, but sweet French vanilla oak. It has a strong mid palate of rich floral notes and smoky vanilla French oak but with soft elegant length on the finish. The flavours are complex with a blend of florals, berries and oak, not over ripe and porty but shows typical Coonawarra spicy berry flavour.
2008 Penley Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon x 2
The aromas are of blackberry and cassis. Distinct blackberry/ blackcurrant (Cassis) flavours, characteristic of a good Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon. The flavour is young ripe fruits with soft grape and oak tannin, so typical of the Penley Style. A wine that is closer to full bodied with more grape and oak tannins but that still maintains balance.
2008 Penley Estate Highland Shiraz x 2
The colour is deep purple with a strong ruby red hue. Strong lifted aromas of ripe berry and spice, with complex savoury elements and some smoky oak. The flavour is rich and strong ripe berries dominate. A soft and rich middle palate with silky oak tannin on the finish to balance the fruit flavours.
